The Soöruz Watersports Chest Zip Oysterprene wetsuit is the ideal choice. Its advanced technology and eco-friendly materials will allow you to perform at your best in the water while protecting the planet.

There are three types of zipper closures on wetsuits, each with its own advantages and disadvantages in terms of ease of donning, flexibility, and watertightness: Chest-Zip, Back-Zip, and Zip-Free.

1. Back-Zip Closure

It is the most traditional and common type of closure , especially in entry-level and mid-range suits.

  • How does it work? The zipper runs along most of the back, from the neck to the lumbar area, allowing the suit to open very wide . This greatly facilitates access to the wetsuit. Once inside, the zipper is closed by pulling a cord usually attached to the slider.

  • Advantages:

    • Ease of putting on and taking off: It is the easiest and quickest to put on and take off, ideal for beginners or people with less flexibility.
    • Economical: These are usually the most affordable suits.
  • Disadvantages:

    • Reduced flexibility: The zipper is a rigid part that can limit flexibility in the back, especially in the shoulder area.
    • Less watertightness: Although many models incorporate internal flaps or barriers ( batwing or back wash ) to minimize it, there is always a greater possibility of water entering through the zipper compared to other systems.

2. Chest-Zip Closure

This type of closure is very popular in mid- and high-end suits , offering a good balance between flexibility and tightness.

  • How does it work? The zipper is shorter and runs horizontally across the chest. To put it on, you enter through the neck/shoulder area, pull the suit up over your body, then slide one shoulder in, then the other, passing your head through a smaller opening. Finally, close the zipper horizontally across your chest.

  • Advantages:

    • Greater flexibility: By not having a long zipper on the back, the dorsal area is more elastic, which improves freedom of movement while rowing.
    • Greater watertightness: The position of the zipper on the chest, combined with internal flaps, significantly reduces water entry.
    • Greater warmth: Less water intake means the body stays warmer.
  • Disadvantages:

    • More difficult to put on and take off: The opening is smaller, which may require a little more practice and flexibility, especially for the first few uses.
    • Price: Generally more expensive than Back-Zip.

3. Zip-Free Closure

It is the most advanced and performance-oriented option, present in high-end wetsuits.

  • How does it work? As its name suggests, it doesn't have a zipper. The suit is accessed through a highly elastic opening, usually at the shoulder or neck, which overlaps and is sealed with the material itself or with a Velcro system. It requires the neoprene to be extremely elastic.

  • Advantages:

    • Maximum flexibility: With no zippers, the suit offers complete, unrestricted freedom of movement.
    • Maximum watertightness: Minimizes water entry, keeping the body dry and warm.
    • Greater comfort: No zippers that can rub or get in the way.
    • Greater lightness: The absence of zippers reduces the overall weight of the suit.
  • Disadvantages:

    • Harder to put on and take off: It requires a lot of practice and the neoprene is extremely stretchy, which can be a challenge for people with less flexibility or larger sizes.
    • Price: These are the most expensive wetsuits on the market.
