The Maritime Rescue Helimer helicopter successfully rescued a kitesurfer with symptoms of moderate hypothermia on a beach in Pájara, Fuerteventura. The incident occurred on Sotavento Beach in the aforementioned municipality when a call was made about a kitesurfer who had not left the water and cries for help were heard in the area.
The Canary Islands Emergency and Security Coordination Center (112) immediately activated search and location resources. Once the victim was located, the Helimer helicopter rescued him and transported him to Gran Canaria Airport. There, Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC) personnel assessed his condition and confirmed that he was suffering from moderate hypothermia. The man was subsequently transferred to the Gran Canaria University Hospital for medical attention.
The Importance of Neoprene in Water Sports and Its Relationship to Water Temperature
The recent rescue experience in Fuerteventura highlights the critical importance of proper wetsuit use in water sports. Neoprene, a highly effective thermal insulation material, plays a vital role in preventing hypothermia, especially in cold waters. Selecting the correct wetsuit thickness, based on water temperature, is essential to ensure the safety and comfort of athletes.
When selecting a wetsuit, it's essential to consider the water temperature where the activity will be performed. The appropriate thickness varies depending on the weather conditions:
- Warm water (22°C and above): For milder temperatures, thin gauge wetsuits (1 mm - 2 mm) provide sun protection and a light layer of thermal insulation.
- Freshwater (16°C - 22°C): In moderate conditions, 2mm - 3mm thick wetsuits are recommended to prevent heat loss. The 3/2mm 900 Warmwater Men's Surf Wetsuit is ideal and more versatile in terms of temperature ranges.
- Cold water (10°C - 16°C): In cold water, a thicker neoprene (4 mm - 5 mm) offers optimal insulation against hypothermia, I recommend this OLAIAN model for cold water 4/3mm Front Zip 900 black.
- Very cold water (less than 10°C): In extremely cold conditions, it's essential to wear a 6mm or thicker wetsuit for maximum protection. For these temperatures, I recommend a dry or semi-dry wetsuit, like the ones offered by OLAIAN.
The incident in Fuerteventura underscores that choosing the right wetsuit for the water temperature not only improves an athlete's comfort but also significantly contributes to their safety. Preventing hypothermia is essential for enjoying water sports safely and enjoyably, and a suitable wetsuit is an essential tool in this regard.
