Protect your ears, surf longer: the importance of earplugs

Adam Farrington, @farrington_adam, a passionate kitesurfer and Formula Kite rider, recently shared his experience with exostosis, also known as 'surfer's ear.' After 10 years of braving the cold British waters, Adam had to undergo surgery to remove the bony growths in his ears. 😷🏥

But what exactly is ' surfer's ear '? It's a condition where the bone in the ear canal grows in response to cold and wind, which can lead to infections and, in severe cases, hearing loss. 😓
The good news is it's completely preventable. 🎉 The solution is simple: earplugs ! Not only are they a barrier against water and wind, but they also allow you to hear your friends and be aware of your surroundings. 🌬️💦
Fun Fact: Did you know that even professional surfers rely on earplugs to maintain their performance in the water and focus? Yes, those little accessories can make a big difference. 🏄♂️👌
Now, let's talk about how to choose the right earplugs. Look for ones that fit comfortably in your ear and allow for some breathability. And remember, rinse them thoroughly after each use. 🚿 If you already use them and can share your experience with the brand you use, please feel free to comment 🙏.
OPTION 2 😜🤙 For those who surf in especially cold waters, consider a neoprene hat. Not only will it keep your ears warm, but it'll also protect your head from the cold. ❄️🧢
And finally, when you get out of the water, avoid the temptation to use cotton swabs to clean your ears. This can push dirt deeper and cause blockages. Instead, opt for gentle rinses with warm water, just running the shower, and patting dry with a towel or paper towel. 🚿👂
So, before you head out to conquer the waves, wear earplugs in addition to your helmet. Don't forget to protect your ears! Keep the fun in the water and out of the operating room.
See you in the water, and remember, DROP THE BAR! 🤙🌊
